September 26th, 2020
During these time of Covid we find ourselves and our lives adjusting continuously to live and work within the rules. The Electric City Maroon & White special needs hockey team is no different, with our season kicking off in early September there were obstacles to overcome and a lot of planning before we took to the ice. The City of Peterborough Parks & Recreation department gave us a clear direction of what we needed to do to ensure everyone was kept safe and of course have fun!
Due to player and volunteer participation numbers we spit our team into two with Team White & Team Maroon alternating weeks. It definitely wasn’t the same but it was something which was needed badly.
Charities have suffered since the beginning of the pandemic, we have lost all of our fundraising event opportunities. Sadly our candle sales dropped significantly as I write this (July 24th, 2021) however sales are only part of the goal. The “pouring parties” give us a chance to get together after a practice and have some fun together, eat some treats and pour some wax.
On a beautiful Saturday September 26th 2020 we gathered on my front lawn for a first and hopefully last outside “pouring party” With Coach James Williams working the BBQ and the music there was a festive atmosphere. Lots of laughs and hard work produced 120 Christmas candles in just a few hours!
Special thanks to Tricia Mason from Global News Peterborough for coming out to cover the event.
